5 Signs Your Garage Door Spring Is About to Fail

Your garage door springs do the heavy lifting — literally. They counterbalance the weight of the door so your opener (and your back) don’t have to. When a spring starts to go, catching it early saves you from a door that won’t open at the worst possible moment.

1. The door feels heavy

If you lift the door manually and it feels much heavier than usual, the spring is losing tension.

2. Loud bang from the garage

A snapping spring makes a sharp, loud noise — often mistaken for something falling. If you heard it and the door won’t open, don’t force it.

3. The door opens crooked

One side lifting faster than the other points to an unbalanced or failing spring.

4. Gaps in the spring coil

Walk up and look: a visible gap in the tightly-wound coil means the spring has already snapped.

5. The opener strains or reverses

An opener working against a weak spring will struggle, stop, or reverse partway.

Don’t attempt a spring replacement yourself — springs are under extreme tension and cause serious injuries every year. Call a professional.
